Music Program Descriptions

Below is an overview of all one-on-one and group music lessons offered at the West Vancouver Community Centre (WVCC) and the Gleneagles Community Centre (GECC).

Fall Lessons

Winter Lessons

Cello: One-on-one Lessons (4 yrs+)

Our cello lessons cater to beginning and intermediate students, and introduce fundamental concepts such as instrument care and tuning, tone production, bowing technique, and fingering. More advanced students will be encouraged to develop repertoire and enhance their understanding of musical interpretation.

Drum Set: One-on-one Lessons (8 yrs+)

These lessons are for students of all abilities, and are tailored to their individual interests. A drum set is provided, but students are required to bring their own sticks. 

Electric Bass: One-on-one Lessons (8 yrs+)

Lessons focus on fundamental concepts including fingering styles, picking, and reading both tablature and conventional music notation. Students are required to bring their own bass guitar and patch cord, but an amplifier will be provided. Students interested in studying the electric bass should register for Guitar—Private Lessons with Babak Hazrati at GECC on Fridays.

Flute: One-on-one Lessons (8 yrs+)

These lessons are ideal for those who wish to learn the flute in an individualized setting. One-on-one instruction is provided for all ages and abilities, and students will develop and refine concepts related to tone production, technique and the interpretation of music.

Guitar: Group Class (8 – 10 yrs; 11 – 13 yrs)

These classes are ideal for beginning students who would like to learn the guitar in a small-group setting. Students will learn some of their favourite music, meet other guitarists, and strengthen fundamental techniques such as finger-picking and strumming.

Guitar: One-on-one Lessons (8 yrs+)

Few instruments have had as profound of an impact on popular music as the guitar. Come learn about the instrument that revolutionized blues and rock 'n' roll, and is a mainstay of jazz and folk musicians. Students follow an individualized program of study and are encouraged to learn fundamental skills. Instruction on both acoustic and electric guitar is offered.

Piano: Group Class Level 1 (4 – 5 yrs; 6 – 7 yrs)

These classes provide an introduction to the piano for young, beginning musicians who wish to develop their ability in a small class setting. Lessons focus on having fun while teaching the fundamentals of the instrument. After taking this class for one term we recommend that students consider enrolling in a Level 2 group class or private lesson.

Piano: Group Class Level 2 (4 – 5 yrs; 6 – 7 yrs)

The classes are for young, beginning students who have already taken the Level 1 group piano class. Lessons focus on having fun while teaching the fundamentals of the instrument. After taking this class for one term we recommend that students enroll in a private lesson.

Piano: One-on-one Lessons (4 yrs+)

Whether you're a child who can barely reach the keyboard, someone learning piano later in life or one who is focused on preparing for Royal Conservatory Exams, we can help you reach your goals. Our instructors are expert teachers with strong backgrounds in piano performance. Please consult with the instructor during the first lesson to determine appropriate repertoire and method books.

Violin: One-on-one Lessons (4 yrs+)

Our violin lessons cater to beginning and intermediate students and introduce fundamental concepts such as instrument care and tuning, tone production, bowing technique and fingering. More advanced students will be encouraged to develop repertoire and enhance their understanding of musical interpretation.
